The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) claims that international business travel can be resumed if an agreement is reached to "protect quarantine-free trips of up to 72 hours." ”
The recommendation is part of the standard guidance on imposed quarantine measures and testing protocols of the European Union Aviation Safety Agency and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (EASA/ECDC), entitled 'Addendum to the Aviation Health Safety Protocol,' stated by SchengenVisaInfo.com.
EASA and ECDC urged the European government to lift the quarantine for people travelling for less than 72 hours. According to WTTC, the move could lead to the return of international business travel and help the economic sector affected by COVID-19.
The Global Travel Taskforce study emphasized that Britain's government is reviewing the plan.
However, the guidelines cannot be enforced because the substitution of quarantine steps with a testing protocol is not specified.
"To kickstart the global economic recovery, the revival of international business travel is crucial, as inbound international business travel across Europe accounted for US$ 111.3 billion (EUR 99.8 billion) last year, while globally it accounted for more than US$ 272 billion," said Gloria Guevara, President & CEO of WTTC.
According to Guevara, the lifting of the quarantine measure for passengers travelling for less than 72 hours "would constitute a significant step towards the wholesale revival of business travel."
"While welcoming all initiatives that could lead to the revival of international travel, we hope to persuade EASA and ECDC to focus on departure rather than entry-level testing in order to reduce the possibility of on-board aircraft transmission and to reduce unnecessary travel barriers," she added.
Latest guidelines issued jointly by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the European Centre for Disease Prevention & Control (ECDC) on the ineffectiveness of quarantine rules and travel restrictions have prompted European and foreign associations to call on European governments to lift the two steps levied in a bid by a significant number of European countries
